Is it safe to charge a battery using a standard non-smart battery charger without disconnecting the battery?

My wife's Suzuki Vitara petrol is only used for occasional short trips and the battery is running low on charge. Can I charge it in situ using a standard non-smart battery charger without disconnecting the battery as I don't want to lose any electrical settings?
Yes, but if it is a trickle charger then it may at some time cause damage to the battery if not monitored. We would suggest that a smart charger may be a better alternative.
