With summer long gone, the weather is turning and that means now is the time to get your winter tyres sorted. Here are ten picks at a range of price points, based on a common tyres size of 205/50 R17.

Kumho WinterCraft WP71

Billed by Kumho as a high-performance winter tyre, which is designed to offer a balance of strong grip in poor conditions alongside good dry handling and wear rates. Rated C for fuel consumption, E for wet grip and a noise rating of 71dB, the WinterCraft comes in at £105.35 fitted.


Bridgestone Blizzak LM005

An impressive all-round winter tyre from Bridgestone, the Blizzak manages a C rating for fuel consumption while also achieving a superior A rating for wet grip. Noise levels are rated at a competitive 71dB too, and while it is a little more expensive at £125.53 fitted, it offers a broad range of ability.

Like the Michelin CrossClimate+, the Continental AllSeasonContact are more of a summer tyre with good all-season performance. The tread pattern of the AllSeasonContact has fewer sipes than most rivals, but it offers a great amount of traction - even in snow - and strong front end grip. 

The Continental do well in wet and dry conditions too with reliable, reactive braking and the tyres are also very quiet and refined even at high speeds. Michelin Alpin 5

Designed for the highest levels of performance, Michelin’s Alpin 5 can handle dry and wet weather as well as snow and ice, and uses sunflower oil in its compound to keep the rubber supple at low temperatures. Rated E for fuel consumption and B for wet grip, the Alpin 5 also manages an impressively-low 68dB noise rating, and comes in at £131.70 fitted.


Goodyear UltraGrip Performance Gen-1

Goodyear’s UltraGrip winter tyre is designed to offer high performance in all conditions, claiming shorter braking distances in snow as well as a special tread pattern created to wear more evenly. Impressive C ratings for both fuel consumption and wet grip as well as a low 70dB noise rating makes it a strong performer in all areas, and costs £133.85 fitted.
